WE ARE ALREADY ON ONE FIFTH OF THE FLIGHT AROUND THE WORLD!
22.01.2012
Since we are already on one fifth of the flight around the world, let us share some statistical data from this part of the flight! Matevž Lenarčič has flown flying with his Pipistrel Virus SW914 from Ljubljana, Slovenia to Manzanillo, Mexico.
In the first nine stages, which means 9 flying days, Matevž has flown 20,150 km and for this distance he needed 81 hours and 36 minutes. The average fuel consumption per hour was 18,2 L, at the average speed of 133,5 kts (247 km/h). On his way to Mexico his aircraft consumed less than 1400 L of fuel, which is a record for itself!
To have such a good statistic on this world flight, we can only thank to excellent airplane, that was designed specifically in our Slovenian company Pipistrel (thank you Ivo Boscarol and team). Besides the airplane it is crucial to also have an excellent flight plan and route, especially while crossing Atlantic Ocean, where Matevz was using the benefits of tail wind.
Matevž is proving his mission " LIGHT, GREEN & ECO" also in praxis! This is the way to go! Bravo, Matevž!

FINISHED 9th STAGE - IN MANZANILLO, MEXICO
22.01.2012

Matevž succesfully landed in Manzanillo after 7h 30 min of flying through the Mexico. Today is another long flying day.  Hope Matevž had had good rest.

Change in FPL. We start at 15.00 UTC and after 2000km and 8h and 30 minutes we can expect him to land in Managua at 23:30 UTC!
The reason for changing the flight plan  are aerodrome operational hours in Liberia, Costarica! Aerodrom has no 24 HR operational time.

SUCCESSFUL LANDING IN CALAXICO NEAR MEXICAN BORDER
21.01.2012

After 8 h and 30 minutes our pilot landed in Calexico and finished the 8th Stage of the flight! Hurraa!

This time we share his thoughts from the last two days of flying. Enjoy!

»Two longer than expected days over southern USA are behind me. After pleasant stay in Sebring, Florida with company of Pipistrel guys, Michael Coates from Australia and Shelly, Dan and Dale from US who will attend Airshow which starts tomorrow, I took off in crystal blue sky headed north. It is winter so the colors are not as I would like. The landscape is rather monotonous. Headwinds kept my spirit down. Airspace around New Orleans is full of danger, military, or prohibited zones so I just ask for FlightFollowing to get instructions around. The weather changed from bright sunny into gray and rainy. The visibility was worsened and the flying was all but nice. Tops of high antennas were hidden in the clouds so I have to trust Garmin database. It was also very turbulent, so no autopilot helped. When the clouds became brighter I just climbed through and proceeded on top. Original plan to land at Canyon Lake I changed due to fuel and possible bad weather in the morning. So I decided for San Marcos, just ten minutes short of Canyon Lake. It turned out to be right decision, as I got extremely fast, clean and friendly support from Redbird Skyport. Virus got free hangaring. The morning was murky, fogy, so I filled IFR flight plan. On 2500 ft I popped out of the clouds and headed right where directed by Austin departure. After canceling IFR, life got better with some stunning views. Canyon Lake was hidden under the clouds but short after they disappeared. Head wind was just terrible, sometimes ground speed dropped to only  60-70 kts. When I was flying just before El Paso’s highest ridge, I met strong mountain waves with huge down and updrafts. After I received sms from Domen about lower winds at low level I descended but turbulence made flying even slower so I decided to climb back to Fl 085 and remained there for the rest of the flight. At sunset I finally landed at Calexico airport just beside Mexican border, got fuel and custom clearance for next day. The adventure continues into Mexico. Huuuura.«

Today we fly again, as Matevž already described to Mexico. Starting at 14.30 UTC towards Manzanillo  and day after to Costa Rica and  then to Ecuador. And then finally rest. Two days, to stretch the legs and breathe some air on the ground as well!  Wishing you safe and rewarding flying.

MORE THOUGHTS FROM MATEVŽ'S 1st BOOK AROUND THE ONLY WORLD
21.01.2012

It is not an easy day for our pilot today. He is fighting against hard wind which is constantly blowing about 40 knts. The turbulence does't stop either, which means he must be flying mostly manually.

But, how would you like if we share some thoughts of our pilot taken from his book: “About the only world”?

"Even from a height of 100 meters, . Interestingly, the. The boundaries were created by man mostly because of his darkest motives for power and wealth. It's hard to imagine that within these borders people think differently than outside them. Some cling to their identity, their culture, their view on the world, their religion, and doing this so hard might bring them to hate those outside these frameworks.
The world within the boundaries are organized according to their own people however they keep forgetting that the mixing of air masses in the atmosphere is not aware of any boundaries; the rain from the clouds is not just theirs, even though all  citizens of the world use the same sun, it doesn’t hear them all at the same time.
However, the rules of air traffic in the airspace of each country vary widely. Flying in Slovenia is not the same as flying in Mongolia, Russia or America, despite the fact that the same laws of physics keep aircraft in the air. "

This time we also want to share some photos from the. Let us Matevz’s view on that part of the world help to expand our hearts and appreciate the beauty within us and around.

Yours, always,

GLWF team

SUCCESSFUL FINISH OF 7th STAGE
20.01.2012

With start of about two hours of delay Matevž finally took off from Sebring in Florida and flew towards Canyon Lake in Texas. He was flying quite low, partly because of the wind, it was very tourbulent and there was also strong wind above. But this afterall gave him plenty of possibilites to photograph amazing and stunning scenary bellow. For the 1869 km long flight he needed only 8 hours and 10 minutes.

Well, the there was a slight change of the airports as you could follow, The reason for not landing at Canyon Lake but at San Marcos Muni instead is that they could not assure the fuel.

Tomorrow is another day, and we fly again! Here is the plan. Matevž will take off  from San Marcos Muni (Texas) at 13.30 UTC and 7 hours later we can expect him at Calexico (California). The flight is 1690 km long. In case there will be some changes or delays, we wil inform you in time as usual!
Have sweet dreams, and you Matevž, too! :-)

TODAY WE FLY AGAIN
19.01.2012

The flight plan for 7th stage of WGLF is as follows: Leaving Sebring Florida towards Canyon Lake in Texas at 12.00 UTC. The flight is 1869 km long and will take about 8h.

Canyon Lake, located on the Guadalupe River in Comal County, Texas, is one of the deepest lakes in Texas with an average depth of 43 feet.

There will be stuning photos, no doubt!

BLACK CARBON MEASURMENTS
18.01.2012

Black carbon affects the optical properties of the atmosphere when suspended, leading to local heating or cooling, depending on the processes involved, some authors like Menon, Hansen and others describe in their studies (Menon 2002, Hansen 2000). Black carbon is recognized as the second most important cause of global warming with a contribution between 20% and 40% with a significant regional heterogeneity (Ramanathan 2008).

There is a complex interplay between the local pollution, regional transport and the climate effects. These are major issues that need to be resolved on a global and regional level. Measurements of black carbon in global background locations are scarce (Bodhaine 1995, Hansen 1989) and only recently have there been in-situ measurements performed by airborne platforms (Spackman 2011).

As you might be aware, part of the Green Light World Flight is also measurment of black carbon concentration. We will demonstrate that a lightweight aircraft can provide valuable information on black carbon concentrations, their regional heterogeneity and vertical profiles with a minor payload and for a fraction of the cost associated with large airborne platforms.

Pipistrel's VIrus has been modified to include an aerosol inlet andan Aethalometer is being used to measure aerosol optical properties at different wavelengths. However, the wavelength dependence of absorption enables us to distinguish between two major sources of black carbon: biomass and fossil fuel combustion. The results will therefore be not only the concentrations of black carbon at the elevation of the flight but also the source locations.

Measurements are constantly performed throughout the flight and include regions, where no or very little measurements have taken place, such as Antarctica, Africa and over the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Please, have a look at first results of black carbon measurements and choose different stage of the flight:
