To begin with, it is an impressive endeavour! As technical person I can imagine that paticular engine could be plagued with failures for no particular reason at all. It could be fuel or something more sinister. Therefore I'm eager to learn about the engine problem source and about solving it. If it is only possible. My admiration to everybody involved in the project and, good luck. LJCE TWR 26.02.2012 17:31:24 GMT

While waiting for Mr Colin, Matevz and Pipistrel team to do the work on Rotax, you can take a look at the next stages through S Pacific, NZ and Australia, as they are planned according to GLWF itinerary: http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=ntaa-ncrg-nzaa-NZNV-YSCB-YMML-YAYE-YBTL-WABB&MS=bm&DU=km&SG=140&SU=kts
Interestingly, I have noted that on the flight from NCRG to NZAA there are really no alternate airports. Matevz had SCIR while flying from SCIE to SCIP. That means that ROTAX really has to work immaculately on the next stages. dkrevs 26.02.2012 17:10:34 GMT

IN KONČNO UGLEDAM TAHITI
Do sedaj – vse ok!

Matevž in ekipa. … AND TAHITI CAME INTO VIEW
Little one is under the hangar roof of very kind members of Aeroclub Tahiti. Almost fully loaded with good fuel waiting for another flight over the blue.
South Pacific adventure started before sunrise in Concepcion after a day brake to solve out some engine issue. Small fuel leaks at carbs have been cleaned and short test flight did not show any problem. So nobody really want to dismount the carbs to take a closer look because of responsibility for mamuth ocean crossing next day. There is only one person in Chile who could do this kind of service but 1400 km north of Concepcion. Andres Gonzales, LAN pilot ad Pipistrel distributor came from Santiago to help me with preparations. With a lot of help from local pilots we managed to refuel aircraft to the very top. Night was very dark, no moon, light wind and no clouds. Preparations went very smooth due to helpful personal at airport and in no time with almost no delay I was lined for take off. This was a kind of test flight with so much fuel, never done before, so a number of worries just dance around my mind. But all performed well this time no engine overheating and I soon riched FL100. After an hour light became form behind. My internet in the hotel was down so I was 100% dependent of Domen knowledge and precision as there was not much space for errors due not good headwind through most of the flight. The beginning was terrible slow so soon got message from Domen to head a bit to the north where condition soon improved to the reasonable level. Fuel calculations, Point of no return to Concepcion or Robinson Island kept me busy all the time. Frustrated flight due headwind was on the limit all the time and got easier only an hour before landing when became clear that I have enough fuel. Mr Juan Edmunds, native born at Isla Pascua was waiting for me. We have been in contact more than a year regarding refueling. This year he could not provide Aviation gas due transport problems, so the only solution was 93 okt. car gas which is not recommended by Rotax but only solution for Soth Pacific flight. Juan Edmunds did a lot to help us get overflight permission from Chilean authorities. Next day he bought 6 plastic canisters went twice to car station in Hangareva and help with 5 hour dirty work. It was to late to depart for long leg to Totegegie atoll so postponed departure for a day.
He brought me to the aircraft before sunrise, helped me with all possible papers and first light got me overflying beautiful island in best light for photography. Beside taking pictures I have also tested fuel quality which seemed to work with this engine. Than headed straight over the ocean towards Totegegie or Gambier Island which should be some 11 hours away. Most of the flight was OK with band of high TowerCBs on the left wing. Domen sent Iridium message that front is going to cross my way so suggested first northerly detour and when closed with band of TBCs towards Pictarion Islands which were still very far away. With no working stormscope I did not dare to fly into the couds with embedded TC so went down below the cloud base and tried to avoid the worst. The gray wall right to the ocean surface of closed my path so headed along the wall in moderate rain hoped for the brake to proceed towards the destination. Domen was right avoiding to the south soon got me in better visibility and was able to climb again to safer altitude. Landing at Mangareva airport was spectacular with 26 its wind in good direction. After refueling with Avfgas 100-130 (also not very good for Rotax) which was shipped from Tahiti a month ago we went on bumpy ride with Gandarmarie boat to Rikitea, the biggest Island in Totegegie. Small village has 11 churches and at this time only 10 tourists. In last 25 years the sea level rised for 12 cm what is alarming for this community. Next day somehow shorter leg to Tahiti with also a lot better wind at least second part of the flight has been interrupted by engine vibrations which extend few hours flight into long nightmare. This time decision is clear. Leaking carbs, vibrations, no good fuel is enough to stop and wait for somebody to get my Rotax in order. Leon head of Rotax at Pipistrel also agreed with decision and helped a lot finding solution. Colin Alexander, Rotax representative from Solo Wings located just south of Auckland, New Zealand was right away ready to help. He is on the way to Tahiti and I expected him this evening. That is really GREAT NEWS.
Thanks goes again to GLWF team, Pipistrel and many others along the way who makes this flight possible. Special thanks to Domen who take care on my flight all the time and only person who really know about situation out here, but do not have stick in his hand what is a lot more difficult than for me. Domen is my good spirit and my eyes when I am blind in the clouds
All well so far! S5 - PIR 26.02.2012 00:49:03 GMT
Pametna in trezna odločitev. Hi Matevz and the GLWF Team, Patience and SAFETY must always come first. No doubt the right decision you have made to have the engine thoroughly checked. It is a high yielding engine very dependent on fuel to the right specifications, which leaves it vulnerable. The quality of fuels around the world is not what we have in Europe. Matevz must in any case need the rest he can get. Alone for that reason it is a good decision. Hopefully the mechanics will find the problems and fix them. Please share the findings with all of us, so that we can learn form them. Matevz take the rest you can get and as others have already remarked Tahiti cannot be a bad place to take some rest. Wishing you all the best from Copenhagen. Lazio 25.02.2012 21:47:00 GMT

Yesterday during the flight Matevž noticed a vibration in the cockpit which was in his opinion a result of uneven operation of the engine.
After the landing he also noticed some fuel leakage from the carburetors vents again. The first time he had this problem was on the return flight from the Antarctic. We suspect the reasons for it were the additives and impurities in the fuel he had filled his tanks with while in the Antarctic. He had had a minor engine service in Chile, but obviously the mechanics there hadn't been able to remove the cause of the problem fully, because it keeps repeating. So we have decided to recommend Matevž to postpone further crossing of the Pacific until we can find out the exact cause of the trouble and remove it.
At the beginning of the week a service mechanic from New Zealand will travel to meet him and he will try to fix the aircraft and get it airworthy for further flying. If that doesn't suffice, another mechanic is already getting ready here at Pipistrel to depart on Wednesday if necessary. Matevž will now take a few days off on Tahiti and hopefully use his time to write about his adventures while flying over the ocean expanses. I’m sure he’ll also send us many photos to help us pass the time while we’re waiting for the continuation of the flight.
We kindly ask all the fans, Matevž’s friends and everyone who is following this project for patience and understanding. Safety must always come first!
V Čilu so mu sicer naredili manjši servis a težave popolnoma očitno niso odpravili.
