@Michael... Messages from Matevz.. Thank you very much for the great update Michael. I agree the best escape for Matevz today was Uluru. He is nearly there and I hope he will enjoy some dry weather. I hope the rain will not follow him today. I (and many more) was really looking forward to meet Matevz and his Virus in Canberra. Meeting him here in ACT would be once in a lifetime opportunity. It is like the page width has been changed from 800 pixels to 2000 pixels, it makes it difficult to read because you have to keep scrolling sideways even on a 24 inch screen, please delete one should have read this message Auto Pilot Update 06.03.2012 00:30:31 GMT
the free play in the autopilot arm seems to be movement in and out of the servo itself. The arm is actually held fairly firmly and there is no free play in the unit itself but rather the shaft that holds it can move in and out of the servo motor. I am sure it is not meant to do this because it is moving approximately 4 or 5 mm.... as I get more information I will be sure to let you know spyDer 06.03.2012 00:05:50 GMT
@Michael: So many thanks for a detailed update on everything you guys were going through in the last few days. It would be great if you could update us also on the manufacturer's answer to the free play in the autopilot arm. And yes, it looks like Matevz will really need the stormscope while flying across Indonesia! Thanks again, Michael! Weather Info 05.03.2012 23:46:41 GMT

Hello group, sorry at the delay at getting this e-mail to you but unfortunately we have been so very busy with Matevz over the last few days it is almost impossible to get time to write anything. There is so much to tell you and talk about after catching up with Matevz and he is firstly asked me to apologise to the group for not e-mailing this information himself but he is just so very busy there is not enough hours to do everything. Firstly, Matevz had a great flight from New Zealand to Australia, he had to land approximately 1000 km north of where he originally wanted to go in Canberra because of bad weather. The Canberra region is experiencing the worst weather and flooding that they have received since recording started. There was no option but to divert and not fly to Canberra and come to my base on the Gold Coast because of this bad weather. This diversion has caused a number of issues unfortunately, we had a Slovenian embassy function organised and this needed to be cancelled and also Matevz was going to fly over the top of the largest mountain in Australia, Mount Kosciusko but unfortunately everything was covered in rain and storms so plans had to be changed. Just before landing in Australia Matevz started to have electrical problems which is not surprising considering the amount of rain he has been flying through. Remember, Rotax is not meant to run underwater and many, many hours of flying through torrential rain has meant that the whole engine has been supersaturated with water and this caused some problems. Fortunately we were able to diagnose the problems and get everything going again, basically Matevz believed the problem to be with the alternator because in the last several hours of the flight from New Zealand the alternator light was flickering on and off but everything else was running normally. Matevz and myself decided to try and fault find the problem ourselves and we went through every wire leading from the alternator and either put a new fitting or undid the fitting, sprayed with electrical contact cleaner to make sure everything was perfectly clean with no corrosion and put everything back together again. We also removed all of the fuses from the aircraft and did the same, I must say that a couple of the fuses looked a little bit suspect with some very lite corrosion but everything else looked perfect. It took us a few hours to go through the aircraft completely following the electrical circuits and when everything was put back together to our biggest surprise and relief Matevz did a quick test flight and everything worked again! I explained to Matevz that this was probably more good luck than good mechanical skills on our part but I hope that everything continues working electrically. Important for everybody following the adventure Spider tracks started up again and the tracking is working properly and everything else electrically is working properly which is great news. As part of my thorough inspection of the aircraft we found a little bit of free play in the control stick which is very unusual. We traced all of the control rods and linkages checking everything eventually to find that where the control rods connected to the autopilot servo there seemed to be a little bit of free play in the autopilot arm. This is nothing to do with the aircraft itself but with the autopilot servo, there is a little bit of up-and-down movement in the autopilot servo and this is something which I don't believe should be there, you can actually feel the movement through the control stick when the aircraft is on the ground you would probably not notice in the air. To keep everything running perfectly and safe as possible we have spoken with a fellow earthrounder Jon Johansson who is the Australian representative for this product and we believe everything is okay with no chance of failure. Just to make sure we have taken a short 30nd movie showing the movement in the servo arm and have sent it to the manufacturer of the autopilot servo and we will hear back from them about the problem, again it was great to be able to contact somebody by phone and have assistance with the problem, is fantastic to get the support from everybody around the world. Today, Matevz had planned to fly along the Australian coast north north-west to a city called Cairns. With all of these plans weather is absolutely crucial and right on cue a cyclone started to form about 250 km north of our airport with the rain in excess of 150 mm/h. No plane can fly through these conditions and the developing cyclone was sitting stationary so there was no possibility of flying today to Cairns so in true Matevz style he said that this is no problem he will go to Ayres Rock instead which is about 2500 km to the west. Ayres Rock is a very interesting location in the middle of the desert and I would encourage you to have a quick look at the following link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uluru to find out more about this unique location. Because of the terrible weather affecting this trip we realise the name World GREEN Flight is so very true because Matevz is bringing so much rain that the earth is becoming a much greener place just because he is visiting ! For this reason we are happy to accept invitations now from countries with drought for at least 15 years. We are sure that a visit from Matevz will end of the drought and create a flood ! We are so very confident that this will happen because of the amount of rain which has followed him through the Pacific and into Australia and then right on cue a cyclone starts to develop which is very unusual in this location at this time of year but I really think it has something to do with Matevz and his GREEN flight! Tonight he is spending in Ayres Rock, a unique location right in the middle of Australia in the middle of the desert, tomorrow he is planning to fly about 2000 km to Cairns where he is booked into have the storm scope inspected and possibly replaced. From there he heads off to one of the biggest challenges and that is to fly through the monsoon trough to the northern part of Australia and on to Indonesia. This area will again bring substantial rain at this time of year so the flight through this monsoon trough will be very dangerous but once through this region he should have better conditions heading up through Asia and into India. Finally, I have known Matevz for almost 10 years and met him on the previous extreme flights he has undertaken at various locations around the world, again it was my great honour to assist with his trip through this area of Australia. It is so very important to get support from fellow aviators when Matevz is flying through strange and foreign countries. I encourage everybody on the group if they are based at an airport and location which is on Matevz’s itinerary to make themself available and assist, even if it is just transport to a motel, assistance with fuelling the aircraft or anything else you can help with it will make life so much very easy for Matevz. (I know everybody wants to help but you MUST be at the airport or location on his itinerary because many flights are done under special permits and he cannot deviate from the already approved flight plan). Before signing off I have just checked the Internet and he is going great, a good airspeed although the altitude is fairly low which I expect in this region because there is still some isolated rain, shortly he should be in better weather and have a good run through the desert to Ayres Rock. Everybody enjoy! Bogdan 05.03.2012 23:22:23 GMT

Hi Michael and GLWF Team, Looking forward to the updates. To repeat myself this is not a speed record flight, so I trust you will give priority to ensuring that all systems work perfectly before Matevz continues his flight. I am not very surprised that some of the equipment fall out after so many hours flight. This is a very light aircraft and everything is build low weight and not to support an around the world flight. Surely there are lessons to be learned for everyone. Greetings from tropical Madagascar, also subject to the heavy rainfalls of the cyclone season ...... StaneA 05.03.2012 15:29:52 GMT

Hello all I will have a big update for you in about 12 hours, many things to say and tell.
